I'm thinking Dallas is probably worse. I'll be meeting up with some family members over a long weekend. I'll be visiting both cities and am trying to figure out which to visit first.

It's been years since I've been to either city. And I was a kid so I don't remember how bad the traffic was. The plan is to arrive on a Friday evening. But this will be right around rush hour. Thinking Dallas traffic will be worse, right now I plan to get into Houston on Friday and then go to Dallas later in the weekend.

Does this sound alright or would your recommend Dallas on Friday instead? And I'm driving from Alabama so it doesn't matter which one to visit first since it's roughly the same distance.

Thanks for your help!

I've been caught in rush hour traffic in both cities. Both are fairly equal. Houston is more spread out, but if you consider the entire DFW metroplex, then you have the same situation. I think it's "6 of one, half dozen of the other." In other words, it doesn't matter.

But my suggestion would be to find a stopping place on the outskirts of the city you choose. Enjoy a nice meal, take your time. Head into the city after 7:30 or 8 pm and life will be easier.

The Texas Transportation Institute released the top five cities with the worst rush hour. Houston ranked 4th and Dallas did not place in the top 5. According to the study, construction projects to address traffic bottlenecks have created their own problems and new bottlenecks. (Anyone in Houston can attest to that.) The top five cities for the worst rush hour follows:

5. New York City, NY

4. Houston, TX

3. Los Angeles, CA

2. Chicago, IL

1. Washington, DC

In another study, the Urban Mobility Report reported the ten most congested cities in America (not just rush hour but overall traffic congestion). Dallas ranked 7th worst and Houston ranked 4th worst. The top ten cities follows:

10. New York, NY

9. Atlanta, GA

8. Seattle, WA

7. Dallas, TX

6. Boston, MA

5. San Francisco, CA

4. Houston, TX

3. Los Angeles, CA

2. Chicago, IL

1. Washington, DC

If youre coming in from the north on IH 35E, you additionally can bypass the city by technique of way of Loop 12 south, then Spur 408 and then IH 20 east. Youll circulate 35E returned earlier coming to 40 5. there is shape on Loop 12, however the site visitors in this course should not be as undesirable as on 635.
