Stop off in Lake Charles. Play the ponies and/or do a little gambling. Have a lunch. Stretch your legs.

Unfortunately there is not much in between those cities. what I do when I do that trip is I go early afternoon from Houston and stop at Lake Charles. I spent night there and then I go early to NOLA. If you call L'Auberge or Isle of Capri they might even give you a hotel room for free. Even if you do not gamble (and I know your son will not be able to gamble) it is often a good deal. Their rooms are decent and if you stay Monday through Thursday the rooms are either free or very cheap. Both options have pools and other amenities, like free WiFi. If you leave Houston by three you can be on Lake Charles by 5 and enjoy the pool for a bit, have a bite to eat and hit the road in the morning.

There are also a couple of Outlet malls on the way. I think they are around Baton Rouge.

If you take a little detour, you could visit an Indian reservation. I am not sure if there are others, but there is one south of Lafayette. They are the Chitimacha Indian Reservation and have a museum you can visit.

Hey Happy Horn I am happy you asked the question CK is providing us with some very good data. I will have to put this on my private list to keep in mind for my next trip to NOLA.

Good answer by David H. I would urge Monument Valley, staying at 'the view' hotel. Also staying in Moab naerby for Arches and Canyonalnds NP. Yellowstone is well worth it too, if you sre looping back up and you can do Badlands which were great and also Rushmore and Carzy Horse. Of the cities, Vegas and New Orleans are great places for a few days. I would add Boston to the trip.

I will be driving to NOLA 10/26/07. In the past I have always flown there, but I am donating my car to a worthy family and it is cheaper to drive my car there and fly back. Compared to having a company take it there for me.

Unfortunately I am not very good at long distance trips. My max is 3.5...

I did it with my teenager by renting audio books from Cracker Barrel. Sometimes I drove around a bit more so we could hear the rest of the story.

You can drop them at the next CB when you are finished and choose another one.

Ooh, so much to do. Are you opposed to taking detours and taking a long time to get there? First of all, you absolutely must must must stop in Lafayette and eat at Prejean's. Best cajun food you'll ever have. Their website is www.prejeans.com and you can find directions. Stop for a swamp tour in the Atchafalaya Basin. You can look on www.louisianaswamptours.net for one. Look in Breaux Bridge. If you want to take a scenic route and look at some old plantation homes, get off I-10 in Lafayette at Highway 182. Take 182 south through New Iberia and Franklin. There are some pretty homes there, and at least one plantation home you can pay to tour. In Franklin or Morgan City (depending on how far you want to go on 182), get on Hwy 90 and it'll take you into New Orleans. This way takes a lot longer, but it's a really nice drive. Much better than driving the 20-something miles over the Atchafalaya basin bridge to Baton Rouge. And Baton Rouge traffic sucks, so if you do go that way, don't go during rush hour.

The outlet mall mad mex is referring to is between Baton Rouge and New Orleans in a town called Gonzales.
