We are a couple in our mid 50s with a 15 year old teenager on a budget. We are hoping to do without a car and us public transportation. We have heard driving is difficult and treacherous in the Greek Islands due to the poor curvey roads through the hills and mountainsides. Please advise.

Greece has a national bus service called KTEL, which is cheap, safe and reasonably punctual. You'll even be able to visit some of the smaller villages this way.

This is the website for Western Crete bus services, including a timetable, road maps etc.:

Santorini is quite small, and there are plenty of buses and taxis.

There will be less frequent buses during winter.

To answer your question accurately, you will need to state which Greek islands you are going to. In general I will guess you are going to Rhoda, Santorini, and or Corfu. On each of these islands you will be fine without a car and with public transportation. There might be a couple of times you will need to use a taxi, but not many. Good luck!
